San Diego is known for its great weather and year-round outdoor activities for family fun. Take advantage of the beautiful parks and playgrounds with your children as an alternative to video games and screens. From North County to South Bay, these are the top ten parks in San Diego for kids.
Waterfront Park
The water fountains attract children like magnets. This beautiful park contains a state-of-the-art space complete with swings, seesaw, carousels, a sliding mountain, and climbing walls so artistically designed they look more like a public work of art than playground equipment. It has an underground parking garage and is just a couple of blocks from the Little Italy trolly stop.
Downtown Children’s Museum Park
Downtown Children’s Park, one of the beautiful parks located along Martin Luther King Promenade and directly across from the New Children’s Museum, is an ideal place for families visiting the museum or heading to Seaport Village. Here are swings, spinning games, and a large wall that doubles as a handball court or blackboard. It is located about two blocks from the Convention Center and Seaport Village.
Children’s Park and Pond
Downtown Children’s Park continues into what is also known as Children’s Park and Pond. It is a cute little park strategically located in the shade of numerous condominiums and trees. Here children can enjoy small grass hills to climb or roll down. A path passes through large fountains of dancing waters, forming a lively focal point within a reflecting pool of water.
Park at the Park
If your little ones like to play baseball or just play in the sandbox, then this 2.7-acre park on the north side of Petco Park is a good place for the family. You will find green areas, a mini-baseball diamond, and a space for the youngest children. On match days, you can buy a ticket and sit down with your family to watch the game on the giant screen. When there is no play, the park is open to the public, so bring a blanket and enjoy.
Kellogg Park
Kellogg Park sits alongside the sand and surf of La Jolla Shores and is a short walk to the beach from Scripps Pier. The play structures are fairly standard, but there is a smaller, safer, and separate one for younger children. If you want to hang out on the grass or if your children are fond of the beach and all the physical and recreational activities that can be done there, without a doubt this park has a lot to offer them.
Tidelands Park
Tidelands Park is located right at the end of the Coronado Bridge. Thanks to its location, it offers one of the best views in San Diego. The play structure was completely redone in 2015 and now exceeds the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act ( ADA), which means that all children can play here with ease. Cyclists can enjoy the path that runs through the park. Tidelands Park is also right next door to a Skate Park for parents of more daring kids. This place is popular for family barbecues and multi-generational birthdays.
Grape Day Park
To the north of the county, this historic park is located across the street from the San Diego Museum of Children’s Discovery. Let your little ones discover and explore this grape harvest-themed park. You’ll find a newly expanded playground, picnic tables, lawn area, restrooms, and even free WiFi. Pack a lunch, sit down to eat, then let the kids run around and take selfies with the giant bunch of grapes wrapping around a magical tunnel.
Rohr Park
To the south of the county, in the city of Bonita, are the Chula Vista Golf Course. And Rohr Park with picnic areas, playgrounds, soccer and softball fields, and walking trails. This beautiful park also has a hidden gem: two historic houses that, according to legend, ghosts inhabit. Entertain the kids with stories from the past or aboard the Live Steamers’ Railroad, a miniature steam train that runs every second weekend of the month.
Chicano Park
When it comes to history, visit this park recently designated as a National Historic Landmark. The park has new facilities for children, an area for young children. A new handball court, a skateboard path, and landscaping next to the square. The park is home to the largest collection of outdoor murals in the country. And is located under the San Diego-Coronado Bridge in Barrio Logan. A predominantly Mexican-American and Mexican-immigrant community in downtown San Diego.
